Shopify Sales Tax Calculator
Shopify can show tax-inclusive prices or add tax at checkout. When payouts or exports only show a gross figure, reverse-calculate using the rate on that specific order’s tax lines.
Step 2 — Your breakdown
Original price (before tax)$0.00
Tax amount$0.00
Final price (verified)$0.00
Explain calculation
We reverse the tax using the standard formula:
Convert the rate to a decimal (e.g. 8.25% → 0.0825).
Divide the final price by (1 + rate) to get the pre-tax amount.
Subtract pre-tax from final to get the tax portion.
Enter a total and tax rate to see your breakdown.

Shopify tax display modes
US stores usually show prices excluding tax and add tax at checkout. Some merchants enable tax-inclusive pricing for simplicity. The reverse formula is identical; only where you read the rate changes.
Open the order in Shopify Admin: tax lines list rate, jurisdiction, and amount collected for that ship-to address.
Reconciling Shopify Payments
Deposits bundle many orders. Export orders CSV with tax columns rather than dividing the deposit by a single guessed rate.
For partial refunds, use the post-refund totals and the tax rate Shopify applied on the remaining taxable amount.
Cross-border and B2B
Exempt customers with valid resale certificates may show $0 tax—reverse math still applies when tax is present.
International orders may show duties separately; do not run US sales tax reverse math on customs fees.
Common use cases
COGS analysis when buying samples tax-included
Validating theme-displayed “all-in” prices against true margin
Monthly sales tax liability worksheets from order exports
Tips for accurate calculations
Enable order export columns for “Tax 1 Name” and “Tax 1 Value”.
Use Shopify Tax or third-party app reports as the rate source of truth.
Document whether shipping is taxable in each state you ship to.
Worked reverse tax example
You paid $108.25 including 8.25% sales tax and need the merchandise amount for bookkeeping.
> Convert rate: 8.25% ÷ 100 = 0.0825
> Add 1: 1 + 0.0825 = 1.0825
> Divide: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00
> Tax portion: $108.25 − $100.00 = $8.25
✓
Pre-tax: $100.00 | Tax: $8.25 | Total: $108.25
Compliance reminder
Reverse math is for splitting receipts and estimates—it does not replace filing obligations, nexus analysis, or professional tax advice. Confirm rates with your state revenue department or marketplace reports before remitting.
